Google Ads Keyword Match Types

Google Ads offers advertisers various keyword match types, which allow them to control when and in what context their ads appear in search results. Choosing the right match type is crucial to campaign effectiveness, as it affects the reach and precision of your target audience.

Keyword Match Types

1. Broad Match

  • Symbol: Keyword without additional characters
  • Description: Broadest match. Your ad can show for queries that include synonyms, related phrases, and other variations of the keyword.
  • Example: Shoes may display ads for queries such as "buy cheap shoes", "sports shoes".

2. Modified Broad Match

  • Symbol: +keyword
  • Description: Your ad appears in search results that contain the modified keywords in any order, along with their close variants.
  • Example: +men's +shoes can trigger ads for queries like "men's athletic shoes.".

3. Phrase Match

  • Symbol: ""keyword""
  • Description: Ads are displayed when the keyword phrase appears in the user's search query in this exact form, but may be surrounded by other words.
  • Example: ""men's shoes"" can trigger ads for the search query "buy men's shoes" but not for "men's shoes".

4. Exact Match

  • Symbol: [keyword]
  • Description: The most restrictive match. Your ad only appears when the user's query exactly matches or is very close to your keyword phrase.
  • Example: [men's shoes] will only show your ad for that exact query.

5. Negative Match

  • Symbol: -keyword
  • Description: Allows you to exclude unwanted queries to avoid displaying ads for specific phrases.
  • Example: -used may prevent ads from appearing for queries containing the word "used.".

Impact on Advertising Campaigns
